Antigonish County, Nova Scotia is a county in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. These are located in northern Nova Scotia on St. Georges Bay. County Seat is Antigonish.
Background
A County of Sydney was created within 1784. Its boundaries were established by Governor & Council in December 16, 1785.
After St. Mary's Town was established around 1818 it was part inside Sydney County & partially within Halifax County. Inside 1822 that a share of St. Mary's Town which experienced been around Halifax County was annexed to the County of Sydney.
Withinside 1836 Sydney County was diminished in size while Guysborough County was established out of what got been a portion of it . Within 1863 a title of the County of Sydney was changed to Antigonish County. A word Antigonish is of Mi'kmaq origin, possibly derived from Nalegitkoonecht meaning "where branches are torn off". These are said that there were bears in the area that broke down branches for beech nuts.
A town of Antigonish is home to Saint Francis Xavier University
. Antigonish County is as well house to Pomquet Village, a little Acadian village dating back to 1774.
